Determining Heart Rate
For the cardio training portion of the program, members are highly encouraged to get their VO2 Max tested at a local testing facility. If this is not available, members are to use the Karvonen Method of Heart Rate Calculation to determine their training zones. Once either the VO2 test is completed or the Karvonen Method is used, members are highly encouraged to purchase a Heart Rate monitor to be used during their cardiovascular training sessions. The Karvonen method is highlighted below.
Karvonen Method
Step 1. Find and determine Resting Heart Rate (RHR)
Step 2. Age Predicted Max Heart Rate (APHR) = 220 - Age
Step 3. Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) = APHR - Resting Heart Rate (RHR)
Step 4. Target Heart Rate (THR) = (HRR x exercise intensity) + RHR
Step 5. Do THR Twice to calculate THR Range (THRR)
